Monica Lewinsky has learned a lot over the years according to her written article in Vanity Fair. The 40 year old writes, “I myself deeply regret what happened.” As if you didn’t know, she is referring to her salacious scandal with President Clinton. She continued writing, “The Clinton administration, and the special prosecutor’s minions, the political operations on both sides of the aisle and the media were able to brand me.”
So what prompted Lewinsky to come out from hiding after 10 years?
She writes,” I am determined to have a different ending to my story. I’ve decided, finally to stick my head above the parapet, so that I can take back my narrative and give a purpose to my past.”
On the affair, she admits that it was “between two consenting adults.” However, she didn’t appreciate the “abuse” that went along with it. She writes, “I was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position.”
There are some light-hearted moments in the article as well, when she talks about all of the pop culture references made about her. She points out a sexual reference in Beyonce’s song “Partition” saying, “Thanks Beyonce, but if we’re verbing, I think you meant Bill Clinton’d all on my gown, not Monica Lewinsky’d.”
Lewinsky also gets serious and bares her soul when she talks about the public slander that came after the Clinton affair. She reminisces about having “strong suicidal tendencies” and relates her story to all of the young people who are going through public scrutiny today. She writes, “Perhaps by sharing my story…I might be able to help others in their darkest moments of humiliation. The question became: How do I find and give a purpose to my past?”
It’s great that she’s using her platform to do something positive. I’m interested to see if people can get past her scandal and accept the new and improved Lewinsky.
