Just about everyone loves a good laugh and The Hot Zone staff is no different. We were front and center at Hot 97’s April Fools Comedy Show which returned to New York City’s Theater at Madison Square Garden last Friday night. New York City’s hottest radio station presented its annual event to a room jam-packed with a melting pot of comedy enthusiasts. Hosting the show once again was the hilarious comedy duo Shawn and Marlon Wayans. And if that wasn’t enough to cause some serious gut-busting laughter, they were joined by a myriad of equally funny men and women.
The opening act was all about “keeping it in the family” as Chaunte Wayans, niece of Shawn and Marlon, took to the stage to perform her set. You may have seen her in the 2009 film Dance Flick and, more recently, on Nick Cannon’s Wild N Out. While not as notable as the rest of her family, Ms. Wayans is a credible comic in her own right who got the crowd rolling in preparation for the more seasoned acts to take it to the next level. And what better person to introduce her uncles?
And that’s when the laughter began. The brothers kicked the show off with their own individual sets providing that familiar Wayans humor reminiscent of their years on In Living Color. It was a great way to begin a Friday evening but there was so much more to come.
One by one, we were treated to extremely talented comics who showcased their unique and individual styles of humor. The amazing Charlie Murphy was introduced by Marlon and had everyone in stitches for the next 15 minutes. Next up was last year’s host and former 30 Rock star, Tracy Morgan, who took the reigns and completely changed the tone of the evening. The majority of his set focused on, shall we say, erotic comedy, which had the entire theater holding their chests from laughing so hard.
Rob Stapleton, who we’ve seen on HBO’s Comic Relief, Comedy Central and BET Comic View was next on the lineup with his hilarious antics followed by Hot 97 DJ, Cipha Sounds, who kept the laughter going. During Cipha’s set, he decided to bring a few friends along. He introduced the wildly popular Capone to the stage. Capone’s brand of humor is so intoxicating and we were ready for anything. He definitely lived up to his reputation but his set was so short that by the time we got into it, he was already off the stage. No one was expecting Cipha’s next guest. So when he announced Real Husbands of Hollywood star, Kevin Hart, the theater erupted. Everyone stood to their feet with a resounding round of applause as we anxiously awaited the pint-sized comedian’s appearance on stage. And then, without warning, Cipha announced, Yeah right, April Fools Mutha F@*&#ers! I have to admit, he got us real good.
Once we all recovered from the embarrassment, the very funny Cocoa Browns of Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse and Single Moms took the stage and completely made up for it. .Ms. Brown knocked it out the theater with her uproarious female perspective of the intimate relationship between couples which was a nice and humorous twist. We were very impressed with her versatility and we must say she held her own amongst all the testosterone in the building.
Closing out the show were three very gifted artists beginning with A. G. White who brought his unique comedic style with tales of being born and raised as a white man in the East New York section of Brooklyn, NY. His take on the West Indian community was hilarious as he showcased a rather impressive Jamaican accent. It was spot-on and had the audience in tears. Following A. G. was the green-eyed, Bronx, NY native, Gerald Kelly, who demonstrated his amazing ability at impersonating Hot 97’s own DJ Funkmaster Flex complete with the infamous bomb-drop sound effects. Close your eyes and you’d swear Flex was on the mic. He would’ve been so proud. And, finally, Tony Roberts, who has appeared on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam and BET Comic View, graced the stage and entertained us as he brought it home with his jaw-dropping set.
Once again, we’d like to express our gratitude to Marquee Concerts for providing us with the best seats in the house. It was a wonderful evening and THZ will definitely be in the building for next year’s installation. We recommend that you do the same because we all need a little laughter in our lives.
