It was great to finally get the season underway– Week 1 had plenty of juicy matchups us die-hard football fans love to see. Such as; Seahawks vs. Packers, Falcons vs. Saints, and my personal favorite Jets vs. Raiders.

Yes I’m a Jets fan….moving on.

This week I’ll be discussing week 1’s top performances, displayed by a team, or an individual.

Honorable mention:

The Seattle Seahawks

To be honest, they’re not on my top 3 list frankly because they came out and did exactly what the Super Bowl champs should do. It was refreshing not to see the typical ‘Super Bowl Hangover’, that we time and time again use as an excuse when week 1 the champs comes out flat. Excellent performance by them, they hands down dominated every facet of the game against the Packers. So kudos to them.

Now the list:

3. The Jets Defense

This comes as no surprise, and NO it’s not a bias pick just because I’m a homer. They actually talked the talk and went out an executed like they should. Led by MLB David Harris who held the team down with 8 solo tackles. All game long the front four; Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon ‘Big Snacks’ Harrison, Sheldon Richardson and even Quinton Coples applied heavy pressure in the backfield forcing Raiders rookie QB Derek Carr to make quick decisions mostly leading to screen passes. The talk of the week leading up to the big game, was the Jets secondary and how well their inexperienced corners would hold up. Well they came out and held their own… experienced or not they showed they could compete with Oakland’s mediocre wide-outs.

2. QB Matt Ryan

Honestly, after watching HBO’s ‘Hard Knocks’ featuring the Atlanta Falcons, nothing really impressed me about the training camp and preseason that Matt Ryan had. But boy did he come out and spread that rock around like he was delivering newspapers. One for you, one for you, wait let me throw this one deep for you…he was on fire. Completing 31 out of 43 attempts for 448 yards and three TD’s, ‘Matty Ice’ could do no wrong. Not to mention, he led his team in a shoot-out victory 37-34 over the much-heralded Drew Brees and his New Orleans Saints team.

1. Matthew Stafford/Calvin Johnson

They could potentially be the leagues finest duo, including Peyton Manning and anyone of his thousands of offensive weapons. Defenses are in for a hell of a battle against the Lions if Matt and ‘Megatron’ could put up even half of the numbers they did. Matthew Stafford torched the Giants revamped secondary, passing for 346 yards, 22 out 32 completions, and 2 TD’s, and if that wasn’t enough, he added a rushing TD to his week 1 resume as well. Big Calvin Johnson was on the receiving end of both of his buddy’s pair of touchdowns. Megatron had 7 receptions for 164 yards, majority of them coming in the first quarter alone! As you can see defensive coordinators must spend extra time on the drawing board when they see the Lions on the schedule.
