If you’ve watched Gilmore Girls, then there’s a pretty good chance you were blown away by the chemistry between onscreen mother-daughter pair, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore (Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, respectively). The show, which premiered on The WB almost fifteen years ago, is becoming legendary, and the chemistry between Lorelai and Rory has a lot to do with that. But what’s the secret between Graham and Bledel’s pretty flawless chemistry?
Apparently, not months and months of in character bonding before filming. In a recent interview with NBC, Bledel revealed that she hadn’t decided to pursue acting until about six months before Gilmore Girls was picked up. Graham, who had been in the business for awhile, decided to be her motherly mentor. And that’s how you end up with one of the most charismatic pairs in Hollywood history.
Graham noted that there was a lot to “take in,” so many times, she remembers “just grabbing [Bledel], just kind of leading her arm.” When people would remark at their chemistry, Graham would remind them that it existed because she was “mauling” her co-star.
But the onscreen mother was sure to confirm that she and Bledel consistently got along, and she felt lucky to have “such a great partner.” Immediately, Bledel agreed. It’s sweet, it’s genuine, and it’s the Gilmore Girls we’re still madly in love with.
