Recently, there has been quite a buzz around the upcoming Aaliyah biopic that was set to premier on Lifetime. The star chosen to play the coveted role, Zendaya, has suddenly made the decision to back out of the part. She claims that if she is going to play Aaliyah she wants to do it the right way. Without having the family on board, or being able to receive rights to Aaliyah’s music for the film, it just wasn’t the right time.
The eagerness to get the buzz out about the film backfired in the end, because the film might end up being a no go after all. In my opinion, the backlash Zendaya has been receiving for signing on to play this role played a big part in her choice not to be a part of the film anymore. Was she not aware that they didn’t have rights to Aaliyah’s music before? I assumed she knew that Aaliyah’s family wasn’t supportive of the film. Regardless, I think it was a good choice for her to back out. The whole project seems rushed and Aaliyah deserves a substantial tribute.
